Alexis and Julia

Julia is a filmmaker, theology scholar and the founder of Queer Renaissance a multimedia movement building company based on the premise that we can create the world anew. Queer Renaissance is a virtual and physical community beginning in Atlanta and expanding the world, bringing the margins to the center by creating innovative Media Arts and Entertainment, New and Education, Community and Events Promotion and a unique marketplace that values the queerness of labor and creative products. Queer Renaissance offers a range content that touches every aspect of our lives, from children’s literature to youth internships programs, whole health services and entrepreneurial development programs.
Alexis is a writer and educator with a PhD in English, Women’s Studies and Africana Studies from Duke University, the founder of BrokenBeautiful Press an interactive creation-space based on the premise that freedom is free because time and love are resources that we produce together. BrokenBeautiful Press is currently engaged in the ongoing community education series Eternal Summer of the Black Feminist Mind, an exciting grassroots collaboration between community organizations and individuals emerging in an intimate process of transformation inspired by the work of Black Feminists.  Inspired by Kitchen Table Women of Color Press and the dynamism of everyday life BrokenBeautiful Press provides online community building projects, resources for educators, interactive publications, do-it-yourself couture and a number of interactive new media projects including In Your Hands (a radical letter receiving project) and This is What It Looks Like, a video project documenting positive community models. BrokenBeautiful Press is has also launched groundbreaking and influential community education projects including Summer of Our Lorde, a radical summer reading groups honoring Audre Lorde started in partnership with Southerners on New Ground, SpiritHouse and UBUNTU in Durham North Carolina and spreading virally to Chicago, New York, San Francisco and DC and inspiring the offshoot Autumn of (Gloria) Anzaldua.  Alexis has supported her community-based scholarship with grants from the Andrew Mellon Foundation and the Ford Foundation.
Together Alexis and Julia can do anything! Their initiatives, Queer Renaissance and BrokenBeautiful Press (in partnership with community organizations including Project South, SPARK Reproductive Justice, Kindred, Southerners on New Ground, SpiritHouse, UBUNTU etc.) meet at the intersection of queer creative production and community building, and instead of merely standing at the intersection they have decided to hop into a mobile home and traverse it fully, gleaning and sharing all of the insight and transformative power of the journey.
